There are at least 4 skunks that are found in North America. Thanks to the opportunistic behavior and adaptable nature of the skunk, they have the ability to survive in a range of environment. Appearance of the Skunk

As aforementioned, there are 4 types of Arizona skunks located in North America. Each of them has unique features that separate them from the rest. They can grow at around 20-30 inches in terms of length which may include their tail. They can also weigh an average of 6-10lbs. When in the wild they can survive up to 4 years. They have a combination of white and black hair. They have strong front feet that are armed with formidable claws that they use for digging.

Habitat

The skunk has the ability to thrive in a range of environment. On the condition that there is an adequate supply of food and water, they will be able to survive. The skunk will collect its food not more than 2 miles away from their den. They prefer to establish their den around 2 miles away from the water source. When in the wild, they love to dwell in the hollows of the trees. They will also den under the piles of woods and brushes. When they are in the urban area, they will live under our porch or shed. 

Diet

Skunks are omnivores, although they will choose to eat grubs and Arizona insects. This implies that they will eat a combination of animal and plant-based sustenance. The skunks love to eat beetles, worms, grubs, and grasshopper. They will also eat mushroom, berries, and fruits. During the winter when there is a shortage of food, they will attack the bird' s nest to eat the eggs, hunt rodents, and amphibians such as frogs.

Behavior

Skunks are nocturnal Arizona creatures which means that their activity will mostly be concentrated during nighttime. While they will not go through hibernation, they will also limit their activities during the winter season. They will mostly live their life in solitary hunting and living on their own. Skunks are also known for their offensive spray that may cause temporary blindness. However, the skunk will not immediately use this since they have a fairly limited spray. They will give you a warning first that will enable you to stay away from them.

The female Scottsdale skunk will give birth annually. Gestation period will last for around two months. 2-10 baby skunks will then be born during the spring season. Their eyes will be shut until they are around 3 weeks of age. The mother will take care of them for around 2 months. After 7-10 months they will leave the den to build their own family. Skunks that are in captivity will be able to survive for more than 7 years.
